Our client is a State Government department in charge of the protection and security of residents within NSW.
This department has a massive pipeline of work whilst utilising many new technologies in order to deliver the best outcome for their projects.
About the role:
The Cyber Security Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing highly secure network solutions to reduce cyber and technology risk across The Department and support achievement of organisational objectives. The position provides secure development engineering advice, guidance, and assurance for projects both on prem and cloud.
Key responsibilities will include:
This contract is available for an initial 12 Months with high likelihood of extensions.
Located in Olympic Park, Sydney, this role offers a hybrid working arrangement.

About the role:
The Cyber Security Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing highly secure network solutions to reduce cyber and technology risk across The Department and support achievement of organisational objectives. The position provides secure development engineering advice, guidance, and assurance for projects both on prem and cloud.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Design and implement secure architectures to protect digital systems and ensure data confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
- Analyse and mitigate security threats through proactive research and countermeasure implementation.
- Develop and refine incident response processes to minimize the impact and downtime of security incidents.
- Review code to eliminate vulnerabilities and ensure secure application development and deployment.
- Deploy and manage security tools to identify and resolve issues across systems and applications.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations in all security activities.
- At least 3 years of hands-on Cyber Security experience with expertise in security engineering, cyber threats, and risk management.
- Proficient in information security frameworks and standards, including ACSC ISM, ISO 27001/2, NIST 800-53, and NIST CSF.
- Skilled in evaluating emerging technologies, assessing their value, relevance, and risks for the organization.
- Experience in both Windows and Linux environments is preferred.
- Strong presentation, analytical, and interpersonal skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Proven ability to improve existing processes and procedures for efficiency and effectiveness.
- Desirable qualification: IRAP (Information Security Registered Assessor Program).
- Extensive expertise in Azure and AWS cloud design, implementation, and security.
- Proficient in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Ansible, Azure ARM, Bicep, and AWS CloudFormation.
- Knowledgeable in Azure AKS, Azure Container Registry, AWS EKS, ECR, and related containerization technologies.
- Familiar with Azure Event Hub, AppInsight, Functions, API Gateway, and AWS Event Bridge, BeanStalk, Lambda, API Gateway.
- Experience in creating CI/CD pipelines for IaC with Azure DevOps and AWS CodeBuild.
- Strong understanding of cloud Data Security and Security Posture Management.
- Hands-on experience with tools like Azure Security Center, Defender, Sentinel, and E5 suite, as well as AWS Security Hub, Guard Duty, Inspector, and Detective.
- Proficient in cloud Network Security, including AWS VPC, Azure VNET, Cloud Firewall, and Load Balancers.
- Expertise in Hosted SASE platforms (e.g., Netskope) for perimeter security in hybrid models.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, containerization (BareMetal, OpenShift), and cloud architectures (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).
- Skilled in secure segmentation and zoning for network, database, and cloud resources.
- Strong command of tools like Ansible, Terraform, PowerShell, and Python.
- Experience in designing networks for Azure and AWS deployments.
- Expertise in Cloud IPS/IDS (network and host-based) and WAF deployments.
- Knowledge of cloud security monitoring, traffic analysis, and integrating cloud telemetry with SIEMs.
