Our client is a well known and prestigious multinational consultancy who is working with a Federal Government end client on a highly impactful project benefiting the Australian people.
About the role:
We are seeking a skilled Mainframe Application Developer to design, develop, and maintain COBOL-based applications while ensuring seamless integration with enterprise systems. This role involves creating efficient, high-performing mainframe solutions, providing ongoing application support, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet business objectives. Key responsibilities include optimizing COBOL code, managing DB2 databases, adhering to compliance standards, and utilizing debugging tools like Xpediter or Abend-AID. Ideal candidates will have 3+ years of hands-on experience in mainframe application development, strong expertise in COBOL, JCL, DB2, and CICS, and a proactive approach to problem-solving in complex environments. Australian Citizenship and applicable security clearance are mandatory.

Key responsibilities will include:
- Design, Develop, and Test: Create, enhance, and maintain COBOL programs and mainframe-based applications to meet business requirements.
- Application Support: Provide ongoing support and troubleshooting for existing mainframe applications, ensuring optimal performance and uptime.
- Documentation: Write and maintain technical specifications, documentation, and operational procedures.
- Collaborate: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including business analysts, quality assurance, and infrastructure teams, to deliver high-quality solutions.
- Code Optimization: Optimize existing COBOL code to improve efficiency and performance.
- Database Management: Interact with DB2 databases, write and optimize SQL queries, and ensure data integrity.
- Compliance and Standards: Ensure code adheres to organizational standards and regulatory requirements.
- Testing and Debugging: Conduct unit testing, assist in system integration testing, and debug programs as needed.
Mandatory Requirements:
- Proficient in COBOL, JCL, DB2, and CICS.
- Strong understanding of mainframe utilities and tools like TSO, ISPF, VSAM, and SDSF.
- Experience with batch and online processing in mainframe environments.
- Knowledge of file transfer protocols and middleware integration.
- Familiarity with debugging tools such as Xpediter or Abend-AID.
Desired Attributes and Skills:

- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
- 3+ years or 5+ years of hands-on experience in mainframe application development and support.
- Prior experience with enterprise-level mainframe systems and software.
- Exposure to Agile development methodologies is a plus.
